More and more publishers are choosing accessibility. New members working with LIA from 2025

Accessibility is now a priority for many Italian publishers, driven by the European Accessibility Act, effective from 28 June 2025. The European legislation, which aims to ensure that products and services are usable by everyone, including people with disabilities, is leading to a significant transformation in the publishing industry, involving all players in the chain (publishers, online bookshops and libraries, reading solutions, websites and platforms).

In 2025, the number of publishers choosing accessibility and deciding to become members of Fondazione LIA is growing. Joining this year are: Codice edizioni, Ediciclo Editore, Editori Laterza, Il Portico editoriale, Rubbettino, and Casalini Libri, one of the main suppliers of publications to libraries and institutions worldwide.

LIA’s catalogue (www.libriitalianiaccessibili.it) is growing with digital books by 82 publishing brands. It includes not only fiction titles, but also cultural non-fiction and university manuals. A rich and varied publishing offer, including novels, detective stories, children’s fiction, popularisation, study and professional development texts, and ranging from the humanities to science, religion or travel.

Even the most complex texts – with diagrams, graphs, tables, mathematical formulae, etc. –, if produced according to international accessibility standards are navigable by users using assistive technologies. These books offer enhanced quality for all readers, enabling tailored experiences for diverse reading needs.

How accessibility is shaping the Italian publishing industry?

This is a further step forward for Fondazione LIA, which has been working for more than ten years to promote and support the creation of an accessible publishing ecosystem for all.

The European Accessibility Act is a key driver of this transformation, with Italian publishers leading the way. Their commitment is an important recognition of everyone’s right to read that increases the offer available in the market to an increasingly wide and diversified audience.

It is no coincidence that among new members there are also small and medium-sized companies that choose the path of inclusiveness even if they are not bound by the obligations imposed by legislation. According to the APACE project survey (October 2024), in fact, about 30% of Italian micro-enterprises that publish e-books already have accessible titles in their catalogues. This is not only a strategic choice but also a decision grounded in values and social responsibility.
