Are you ready for the European Accessibility Act?

In the European context, the European Directive on the accessibility requirements for products and services, the so-called European Accessibility Act (EEA), aims at improving our industry in the capacity of serving persons with disabilities throughout the EU. The Directive requires publishers to produce their digital publications in accessible standard format, and the entire supply chain to make content available to users through accessible services.

Learning objectives

Fondazione LIA offers European publishers the innovative opportunity to be prepared in time for the forthcoming European Accessibility Act, through a service that addresses the theme of accessibility in publishing with a dual approach: practical and theoretical.

At the end of the process every publisher involved will have a clear picture of its current level of accessibility and the steps to be followed to publish make its publications accessible e-books.

Course structure

This course is divided in 3 steps:

  • Step 1 – Customized assessment: LIA will ask you to answer an online survey to value the current accessibility level of your publishing house. You will receive a customized report identifying the skills gap and the steps to follow to embrace accessibility.
  • Step 2 – One-hour webinar about the fundamentals of an accessible digital publishing ecosystem, an overview on how to create accessible publications and updates on the international standards.
  • Step 3 – Audit: LIA will check the accessibility level of a sample publication of your choice in EPUB format and will provide a detailed customized report, with the analysis of the problems that must be solved to make an accessible publication.

The course offers European publishers, willing to produce accessible digital publications or planning to produce them in the next years, an innovative opportunity to be prepared in time for the forthcoming European Accessibility Act.

  • The legislative framework: Marrakech Treaty and European Directive on accessibility of product and services;
  • The Born Accessible principle and its adoption by a publishing house;
  • Demo on accessible reading solutions;
  • How to implement a successful accessibility strategy;

Number of participants

Limited to a maximum of 25 persons due the practical setting to ensure proper engagement.

Participants will need:

  • A laptop or desktop computer
  • Good internet connection

Follow-up materials

  • The slides of the course
  • A report about the accessibility of your publishing house;
  • A report about the accessibility of an EPUB publication of your choice.

The two reports will be provided within 10 working days after the webinar.

She works in the publishing sector since 1982. Since 1988 she has been responsible for the technological innovation area within the Italian Publishers Association (AIE). She is a Board member of EDRLab, member of the W3C Digital Publishing Business Group, Daisy Consortium and ISO UNI/CT 014/SC 04.

She has been working at the Italian Publishers Association since 2011. Since 2013 she has been working with Fondazione LIA where she is responsible of training activities, projects and events. She takes part in the FEP Accessibility Group and has a specific knowledge about image description.

Computer engineer and accessibility expert since 2013. He is responsible for the technical aspects of LIA’s consulting and training activities and takes part in several international working groups of W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) and DAISY Consortium.
