Accessible fixed layout ebooks are an emerging frontier in inclusive digital publishing. When we speak about EPUB with fixed layout, we are referring to a format that allows each graphic element to be placed in a defined position on the page, similar to paper layouts.

In the framework of the Bologna Children’s Book Fair (April 13-16), Fondazione LIA is organizing a seminar addressing the topic of fixed layout ebooks. This event will explore the opportunities and challenges faced by publishers working with complex-layout books, such as illustrated titles, children’s books, educational materials, and other publication with complex graphics.

Unlocking accessibility in fixed-layout ebooks

The session will offer participants insights into the ongoing work aimed at enabling publishers to create accessible fixed layout EPUBs, as well as guidance on how to leverage their accessibility features during reading, in line with the requirements and recommendations of EPUB Accessibility 1.1.

Attendees will hear directly from accessibility experts at Fondazione LIA, from the Italian educational publisher D Scuola, part of the Mondadori Group, on its experience in producing accessible complex content, and from EDRLab on how accessible reading solutions for fixed layout texts are evolving.
