Ask the Expert. A session about EPUB Fixed Layout
Conferences
When we speak about EPUB with Fixed Layout, we are referring to a format that allows each graphic element to be placed in a defined position on the page, similar to paper layouts or the PDF format.
EPUB fixed layout is mainly used for the publication of e-books with complex graphics such as comics, children’s books, or manuals such as travel guides or cookbooks. The aim is to keep the graphics very close to the paper layout.
However, realising this type of publication with accessibility in mind is, to date, very challenging. For this reason, the EPUB Fixed Layout Accessibility Taskforce for some years now has started to identify some good practices to make fixed layout files more accessible and has published the document EPUB Fixed Layout Accessibility, which is currently being revised and integrated.
ASK THE EXPERT: THE NEXT EVENT
EPUB Fixed Layout
May 20th, 2025 at 2:30pm (CET)
Zoom webinar
In this session, Gregorio Pellegrino, Chief Accessibility Officer at Fondazione LIA, will explore the opportunities and challenges of realising accessible fixed-layout EPUBs. In 2023, Pellegrino led an innovative project in collaboration with Edizioni Sonda, through which Fondazione LIA developed the first international example of accessible fixed-layout EPUBs.
Each “Ask the Expert” is a one-hour webinar that allows participants to learn more about a specific topic and ask questions to the experts involved. In the registration form, participants are invited to submit questions related to the subject of the event in advance.
The event will be hosted by Katie Durand (Fédération des Aveugles et Amblyopes de France).
